Hugo Ortega’s Namesake Restaurant Reopens in Montrose

Hugo’s Hugo’s

Hugo’s will highlight a different Mexican state each month

Hugo’s, the namesake restaurant of James Beard Award-winning chef Hugo Ortega, will reopen for dine in-service tomorrow afternoon. The restaurant, which has offered only delivery and curbside from it’s location in Montrose since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, will see some changes once dine-in service resumes, according to Tracy Vaught, who owns the restaurant with husband Ortega.

The menu will be condensed, but many of the dishes Hugo’s is known for will still be served, she said. There will be no more Sunday brunch buffet, but a la carte options will be avaialble on the weekends. In the coming weeks, the restaurant will serve a menu of signature dishes from states across Mexico, starting with Oaxaca in May.

“In many ways, this is going to be like opening an entirely new restaurant, and we hope diners will be understanding as we all learn this ‘new normal,” Vaught said in a statement.

Staff at the upscale Mexican eatery will implement the recommended guidelines for safer dining, including limiting occupancy to 25%, single-use menus and requiring that guests wear masks before they are seated and after they are done dining. Hours will also be temporarily limited — 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

While previously closed for dine-in service, Hugo’s was one of several well-known Houston restaurants that teamed up with HEB to bring signature cook-at-home dishes to grocery shoppers. Ortega and Vaught are also planning to open a new restaurant in Uptown Park in the next few years.
