Houstonians can sign up to help out these restaurants and hospital employees by sponsoring meals
While their dining rooms are shuttered, Houston restaurants are helping keep hundreds of healthcare workers fed during the coronavirus pandemic.
Earlier this week, Eater reported that Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson had donated 400 meals from Sawyer Yards spot Sticky’s Chicken to healthcare workers at Houston’s Ben Taub Hospital, and he’s not alone. A number of the city’s restaurants have shifted their focus to cooking meals for healthcare workers while trying to make takeout and delivery sustainable.
To further these efforts a new group called ScrubGrub Greater Houston & Galveston was created to connect restaurants and food purveyors with hungry hospital staffs. According to the group’s Facebook page, it was inspired by a similar effort in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and its members are working with hospitals to coordinate logistics to ensure that the deliveries are made efficiently and safely.
To help out with ScrubGrub’s efforts, Houstonians who wish to sponsor meals can sign up for a time slot and pay a portion of the cost of providing lunch or dinner to healthcare workers at hospitals like Memorial Hermann’s main campus and the emergency room staff at HCA Hospital in Pearland. Charitable food truck Abundant Harvest Kitchen has teamed up with ScrubGrub to donate dozens of meals to date, delivering barbecue sandwiches and mac and cheese to hospital workers this week.
Craft beer favorite The Branch has plans to serve 160 employees at Memorial Hermann’s emergency room in the coming days, and is currently soliciting donations to help pay for this essential service. “This is the least we can do for them,” a post to the restaurant’s Facebook page reads. Via The Branch’s website, Houstonians can buy a $10 meal sponsorship to help pay for these meals. Tacos A Go Go offers a similar option — when placing an order online or over the phone, diners can add a $5 charge to donate to a fund that will be used to provide meals to nurses, testing center workers, and more first responders.
